Since vSphere 6.5 is now GA, i decided to update my lab and provide a step by step guide for the upgrade.

In this post i will discuss the vCenter appliance upgrade first and then i will create another post for upgrading the hosts in the lab.

Prerequisites :

Before you start the upgrade please read carefully the following KB article:

This article contain important information before you start upgrading, the article includes what products are not supported and considerations before you upgrade.

 

In my lab i am using VUM and before I started the upgrade process i need to copy the migration-assistant directory to my VUM server and run the VMware-Migration-Assistant.exe

Current version:

Before we start here is the current version of the vCenter appliance i am using

Upgrading vCenter appliance:

First step is to mount the vcsa iso and navigate to the UI installer (H:\vcsa-ui-installer\win32\installer.exe) , then click Upgrade 

Click next in the welcome screen

In the next screen accept the license agreement

in the next screen Provide the following:

  • Current vCenter appliance IP
  • Current SSO username
  • Current SSO password
  • ESXi host that managed vCenter IP
  • ESXi host that managed vCenter username
  • ESXi host that managed vCenter password

Click yes for the certificate information

Provide the target ESXi host for the appliance to be intalled also provide the username and password

Provide the name for the new vCenter and the root password

Choose the deployment size

 

Choose your datastore (enable thin mode if needed)

Provide temporary IP address for the new appliance(one the install is done the new vCenter will use the source vCenter IP)

also provide the mask/GW and DNS

Click Finish

Go get some coffee,this may take a while 🙂

After completion click on continue button to stage 2 of the install

Click next

Check the warnings and apply the resolution after the install

Select which data to copy from the source vCenter

click on finish (you will need to check the box below)

Provide the root password for vCenter

And its time for a second coffee

New Current version
