Home / blueprint / VCAP-DCV Deploy Objective 1.1 – part 3
In this post we will continue to discuss objective 1.1 from the blueprint
Objectives:
  • Configure ESXi host to use a central Syslog Server
  • Manage/Edit the Core Dump configuration of an ESXi host

Using VMware workstation:

  • Single ESXi Host
  • Microsoft Servers 2012R2 for Services
  • VMware vMA

Documents used:

  • VMware vSphere Installation and Setup

Configure ESXi host to use a central Syslog Server:

before you can configure the ESXi host to use central syslog server you will need to install some syslog server. There are several free syslog servers such as Solarwinds Kiwi , but i decided to use one of my Linux boxes in the virtual environment.

The syslog server that i used runs the rsyslogd service with basic configuration so i can practice the objective, below is a screenshot of the server configuration:

rsyslogd_conf

Now lets go to our vMA and configure the followings:

Syslog:

esxcli system syslog config set –loghost=’udp://192.168.128.10:514′

esxcli system syslog config get

esxcli system syslog reload

Firewall:

esxcli network firewall ruleset set –ruleset-id=syslog –enabled=true

esxcli network firewall refresh

When done you can look at the /var/log/messages file in your Linux box to see the logs from the ESXi host.

Manage/Edit the Core Dump configuration of an ESXi host:

For this task we need to enable the vCenter dump collector service , if you use the use the windows vCenter server refer to VMware KB article 2002954

dumpcollector1

After the service is running, go the vMA and run the following commands:

esxcli system coredump network get

esxcli system coredump network set –interface-name vmk0 –server-ipv4 192.168.128.20 –server-port 6500

esxcli system coredump network set –enable true

esxcli system coredump network get

esxcli system coredump network check

/sbin/auto-backup.sh
