VCP6-DCV blueprint section 4:Upgrade a vSphere Deployment to 6.x – Objective 4.2

In this post we will continue covering the upgrade a vSphere deployment objective from the blueprint.

The following are the blueprint objective:

  • Compare the methods of upgrading vCenter Server
  • Backup vCenter Server database, configuration and certificate datastore
  • Determine correct order of steps to upgrade a vSphere implementation
  • Given a scenario, determine the upgrade compatibility of an environment
  • Upgrade vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA)

Compare the methods of upgrading vCenter Server:

Depending on your previous version of your vSphere environment  you can decide which upgrade path to use. in vSphere upgrade document you will find all paths to upgrade:

for example upgrade from vCenter 5.X with embedded services

or if you want to upgrade vCenter 5.X with external services:

Backup vCenter Server database, configuration and certificate datastore:

Before you do any changes in production environment you always have to have a roll back option or a backup, same goes true to your virtual datacenter , here are some guidance for backup before you upgrade

  •  Backup vCenter database
  •  Backup all external services server (if you dont use embedded configuration)
  •  In case of vCSA backup the appliance

Determine correct order of steps to upgrade a vSphere implementation:

There is a great VMware KB about the order to upgrade that include ALL VMware products : Update sequence for vSphere 6.0 and its compatible VMware products(2109760) link: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2109760

The general Idea sequence for upgrade:

  1. external vCenter SSO
  2. vCenter
  3. vSphere Replication / VUM/vROP/ vDP
  4. vCloud Connector
  5. ESXi hosts
  6. VMware tools.

Given a scenario, determine the upgrade compatibility of an environment:

i am not sure how this will play out in the exam but there is a good link from VMware for interop matrix that you can use to determine the upgrade compatibility

http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/sim/interop_matrix.php?type=2&solutionsup=1

Upgrade vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA):

upgrade4

Source: VMwar vSphere Upgrade document

To upgrade to the latest version of the vCenter Server Appliance, you must use the Client Integration Plug-In. All of the installation files necessary for the vCenter Server Appliance upgrade are included in an ISO file. you can only upgrade to v6.0 from vCSA5.1u3 or vCSA 5.5

The upgrade is basically migration from the old vCSA to the new vCSA while creating a parallel appliance with temporary network
