vSphere SRM 6.X Install and configure – Part 1

Home / Replication / vSphere SRM 6.X Install and configure – Part 1

In preparation for the design exam we need to cover vSphere replication and SRM. I decided to create a lab to demonstrate the installation and configuration of SRM. On this blog, you can find more information about replication cover in the VCP/VCAP deploy sections

The following are the configuration of the two datacenters used for my SRM lab

Datacenter Name: EP-L1 Prod

Objective: Replication Source

Configuration: Using four ESXi servers in a cluster configuration

Datacenter Name: EP-Remote

Objective: Replication target

Configuration: using two ESXi servers in a cluster configuration

Note: At this point I will not use SRA’s, I will be using vSphere native replication

Prerequisite:

  • Make sure your DNS configured correctly
  • Make sure your NTP configured correctly on all hosts, vCenter and VM’s
  • Make sure vSphere replication is configured correctly between both sites
  • Both sites need to run the same vCenter version
  • For non-embedded database use you will need to create a database for SRM and configured the ODBC, in my lab I used the embedded database configuration

Installing SRM:

We will need to perform the following tasks on both the source and the target

  • Obtain SRM image from VMware website
  • Run the SRM executable on a supported windows box , I am using Windows 2012R2
  • Configure storage for SRM
  • Register SRM with PSC and vCenter
  • Generate certificates
  • Configure database

After all the above completed on both sites we will need to pair the sites

Additional configuration we will discuss in the next post.

Step by step screenshots:

Run SRM executable  and click next several times (Installation, license etc…) until you get to choose the storage

Confirm installation destination folder location

Provide Address for your PSC (In my case its vCenter embedded configuration), vCenter/PSC username and password

Make sure you get a certification information from your vCenter/PSC and accept

Choose your vCenter/PSC

Provide local site name and admin email information and choose the local host (the windows BOX that you installing SRM on)

Choose Default SRM plugin

Generate certificate

Provide certification information

Select the database

Provide database information

Choose local account or AD

Click Install

Finish!!!!

Login and logout of the web interface and you will see the new SRM icon

Repeat all the steps from above on the remote site once complete you can continue with paring the sites

To pair the site we will need to perform the followings:

  • In the Site recovery home screen Click on sites

As you can see from the image below we get a notification that the sites are not paired, In addition you VMware provide a guide to configuring SRM, Click on Pair sites

Provide the remote site PSC/vCenter address

Provide remote site vCenter/PSC username and password

click on Yes

and Yes again

Dont worry about the authentication error, Switch to the remote site web interface and click on main site DNS name you will be prompt to enter username and password

Verify that you are paired and authenticated on both sites

In the next post we will continue covering the SRM configuration

Thanks for reading
